The Chichester constituency is full of kind and charitable people. One of the best parts of being the Member of Parliament is meeting and hearing from so many people who do so much across our wonderful communities. On Friday, I held a reception to welcome and connect Ukrainian families and their sponsors in The Assembly Rooms, Chichester. It was fantastic to bring Ukrainian people living in our community together with one another, and introduce them to key organisations that can offer support in the Chichester constituency.
It was a brilliant event and extremely special to meet so many people who were all so grateful to be here in the UK. Since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, my team and I have supported just over 200 individuals with their applications through the Home Office, and even a few much-loved dogs and cats. It was heart warming to meet some of those people last week, and I was touched by all their kind words – as was Leanne from my team who was inundated with people offering their personal thanks.
I want to thank all the organisations and representatives who came along to support the event. Most of all I want to say a massive thank you to all the generous sponsors, who have opened up their homes and lives to help those fleeing conflict – and the Ukrainian people themselves who are already adding to the vibrancy of our community across the Chichester District.
On another note, the leadership campaign continues, and we are now down to the final two. From the get-go, I backed Rishi Sunak – I made my decision because we need honesty, integrity, and experience to guide us through the challenges ahead - he has the right skills and experience to tackle inflation, grow our economy and represent us on the world stage. On a very human level, I think he can win the next election as he is not only smart but also a really nice guy. I have outlined my position in more detail on my website – www.gilliankeegan.com.
