Since January, I have been studying in London and interning for Gillian. As an intern, I got to work exclusively from the Parliamentary estate in Westminster. From day one, I was given a variety of tasks to work on and had developed new skills by the end of my first week. This opportunity gave me an excellent chance to learn about the UK political system and allowed me, as an American student, to learn about a form of democracy different from what I am familiar with. I also got to learn about a wide variety of UK policies and some of the intricacies of international relations.
One of the best parts of my experience was the people I worked with. I immediately felt welcome in the office, and the whole team was genuinely invested in helping me learn. I always felt that the work I did was appreciated, and I know the quality of my assignments improved throughout the term. It was also exciting to know that my work was producing usable resources and results.
No single day working in Parliament looked the same. I was given a wide range of tasks, allowing me to learn many versatile skills. I created content for the website and media platforms, responded to constituents, and participated in team meetings. One of the best opportunities I had to see the Government up close was going to watch PMQs in March and hearing the Chancellor read the Spring Statement.
The experiences I had working for Gillian in Parliament are unlike any other internship I could have had. I would definitely recommend this internship for anyone looking to do work that is both challenging and rewarding. I know that the skills I learned here will be invaluable in the future, and I am so thankful to have had this opportunity.
