A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) has been formally made to help progress a key housing site in Tangmere in Chichester District.
The site is one of Chichester District Council’s Strategic Development Locations and has been identified for between 1,000 and 1,300 homes, including 30 per cent affordable housing, plus a wealth of community facilities. This will go towards delivering the housing requirement set out in the council’s adopted Local Plan.
The site also has the support of Tangmere Parish council and is part of its Neighbourhood Plan. In September 2018 a development partner, Countryside Properties, was selected to help deliver the project.
“I’m delighted that the CPO has been formally made,” says Councillor Susan Taylor, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning at Chichester District Council. “This important site has just not progressed in the way it was envisaged. Despite on-going conversations between our officers and landowners / promoters over the past few years to try and reach an agreement we felt that really, this was the only way in which the site could be developed in a structured and cohesive manner.
“Using a CPO is a last resort, and because this is a key site in our Local Plan we felt that this was the only way that these much-needed homes were going to be delivered.”
The council will now submit the CPO to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government for confirmation.
