They say a week is a long time in politics – and right now that phrase stands truer than ever. Over the course of the week, the Prime Minister has stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party and we are now in the midst of a leadership race.
I am keenly aware that our country, like many across the globe, is facing big challenges at home and abroad, and therefore we must ensure that our next Prime Minister has the necessary experience and good judgment to steer our course. We are fortunate that most of the candidates who’ve put themselves forward would do a great job in Number 10, however, for me, I believe Rishi Sunak is the right man for the job.
For the last couple of years, he has successfully steered us through the most challenging economic landscape in peacetime. His interventions throughout covid saved 12 million jobs and thousands of businesses – and I believe he will ensure we have the right policies in place to guide us through the cost of living crisis, brought about by the pandemic and war in Ukraine.
A most pressing issue is the war in Ukraine. The UK and, in particular, Boris Johnson has successfully led the international community in standing up against Russia’s illegal war. Having spoken to Rishi he has confirmed that he will maintain a strong stance against Russian aggression and is committed to investing in and supporting our Armed Forces.
Being Prime Minister is an unenviable job. Although I think it is right that Boris Johnson stepped down, I am grateful to him for his service to our country, through what has been one of the most challenging times in our history.
A few of you wrote to me to ask why I chose not to resign from my position as the Minister for Care and Mental Health. At the time I released a statement explaining my position, but in short, I believe the work I am leading to reform our social care and mental health services is vitally important - it transcends party politics and matters to families across the country. To serve in Government is a privilege, and a responsibility I take very seriously. If you want to read my statement in full visit my website:www.gilliankeegan.com.
