Gillian (pictured, right, at a previous ‘Shed’ event) has seen first-hand how 'Shed' initiatives can make a real impact on people’s well-being.
Gillian Keegan, the Member of Parliament for Chichester, has today welcomed the Government’s announcement of £421,375 in funding for The Chichester Shed to take their hands-on, community project ‘to the next level’. The investment package, delivered through the Government’s Youth Investment Fund, will allow the Chichester Community Development Trust to expand its popular Shed initiative, with a focus on getting even more young people involved.
The Chichester Shed provides a welcoming and friendly space for people of all ages and abilities to come together and try their hand at a range of hands-on projects, from woodwork to metal work and electronics. Tools and equipment come provided for all members, or ‘shedders’, who come from all walks of life to learn new skills, meet new people and get creative.
The Government’s Youth Investment Fund launched in 2021, targeting £300 million in investment to improve the health, wellbeing, skills, and opportunities for young people across the country. Today, the Chichester Shed joins 44 grantees across the country benefiting from the second wave of investment from the Fund, with support totalling £70 million.
Commenting, Gillian Keegan MP said:
“'Shed' initiatives are a brilliant idea and I've seen firsthand what a difference they can make to people's wellbeing - particularly for young people and older isolated people. This is a significant award which will help to upgrade this important facility."
“Today's investment is testament to the hard work and dedication of Chichester Community Development Trust. The funding will ensure that The Chichester Shed can go from strength to strength as a vital asset for young people across Chichester, giving them opportunities to learn new skills, try new activities and support their mental and physical wellbeing".
Commenting, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said:
"I want every young person to have the opportunity to access the kinds of life-changing activities which expand their horizons and allow them to develop vital life skills.
“These next 44 youth centres will give 12,000 more young people the opportunity to access these activities. Building on the first tranche of Youth Investment Fund investment that is seeing new projects like the Alt Valley Communiversity opening in Liverpool and support for Scouts and Girlguiding groups to reduce their waiting lists.
“We will make sure every young person has someone to talk to, something to do, somewhere to go.”
