Gillian Keegan MP invited Julia Hixson a friend and local party organising secretary to Parliament to celebrate the centenary of women being eligible to stand as members of Parliament for the first time. The event gathered together female MPs and other leading women within politics together. During the day there were several events where women called for a 50:50 parliament where women and men are equally represented in the House of Commons.
After the event Julia said: “I was thrilled when my brilliant MP for Chichester Gillian ~Keegan invited me to experience the inner workings of Westminster for the ‘Ask her to stand 50:50 day’. Seeing first hand how deeply involved she is in National and Local issues and what it means to be an MP was truly inspirational.
The atmosphere of over 300 women coming together on the day was extremely intoxicating and empowering. The day was filled with optimism – women encouraging each other and raising the awareness of the imbalance in female representation in Parliament.
My eyes were opened to how much support and how accessible standing as a candidate could be.
It truly was a day of celebration- not raging feminists banging the drum but keen and sensible women from all walks of life who really can have a positive impact towards a stronger democracy.
Totally uplifting – I feel so lucky to be part of it!”
