Gillian Keegan MP visited Portfield Primary School on Friday 14th June. The invitation was also extended to their local County Councillor, Simon Oakley who joined Gillian on the visit.
On arrival, they were shown around the school, whilst the Head Teacher, Andrew Strong, told the group about the work the school has done to become graded as ‘Good’ by Ofsted from their previous mark of ‘requires improvement.’
Gillian was very impressed with the exceptional support the school offers children and after her visit said: ‘It was wonderful to meet the dedicated team at Portfield Primary who go above and beyond to support their students. The teachers there are an invaluable part of every child’s life and in many cases help entire families who need extra support.’
‘On my visit, they raised several concerns about children and family services, something that I am already looking into, and I will discuss it with West Sussex County Council.’
Headteacher, Andrew Strong said, ‘It was fantastic to have Gillian come and visit Portfield Primary Academy along with our local Councillor, Simon Oakley. Gillian was really engaged with all our pupils and staff and was visibly impressed with our reading and writing programmes.’
‘During her time at the school, my team and I had the opportunity to raise our key concerns in areas like children's social care and SEN funding. I was pleased that Gillian was already very aware of many of the challenges schools like ours are facing and was keen to learn more about how we are working to support children in the school. I am looking forward to continue working with Gillian on these issues and welcoming her back to the school in the near future. ‘
Councillor Simon Oakley said: ‘This visit was invaluable in updating me on the current issues at this school and future primary, and special education needs, school facility planning.’
