I was very sorry to hear that Sir Kim felt it necessary to leave his post. Over a distinguished 42-year career, Sir Kim has served his country with the utmost dedication and distinction. He brought dispassionate insight and directness to his role.
In an act of selfless duty, Sir Kim made the decision to resign in order to relieve the pressure on his family and colleagues and to protect the UK-US relationship. The tributes that have been paid to him have been fitting and rightly deserved.
It has recently been announced, that Sir Kim will become a peer in the next parliamentary session, after former Prime Minister, Theresa May, included Sir Kim in her resignation honours list. I look forward to him joining the other chamber, where I’m sure his experience will be put to good use.
I believe it is very important that our ambassadors and high commissioners around the world continue to feel that they are able to express frank views because the UK has one of the best diplomatic networks in the world. It is very important that the UK Government appoints a new ambassador in the proper way so that we get the very best person appointed in the best possible way for the long-term interests of the UK and our relationship with the US.
