Chichester MP Gillian Keegan has backed Yorkshire Building Society’s Socktober appeal on World Homeless Day.
The Society is running the month-long Socktober appeal throughout October as part of its charity partnership with End Youth Homelessness (EYH).
Donations of new pairs of socks, toiletries and interview clothes plus other items such as woolly hats, gloves, scarves, can be made at the Society’s agency on Crane Street in Chichester.
An estimated 86,000 young people in the UK are homeless and, according to latest figures, 69 young people in Chichester received some homelessness support from their local authority in 2016/17.*
Gillian Keegan MP, said: “I am proud to be backing the Socktober appeal for Yorkshire Building Society and End Youth Homelessness, and I’d encourage everyone in Chichester who can to pop in to the Society’s agency and lend their support.”
Through the course of the Society’s three-year partnership with EYH it aims to raise £750,000. The money raised is funding a bespoke Rent Deposit Scheme, home essentials grants and practical help for homeless young people across the UK, with 138 young people to date supported into their own rented homes. EYH is a UK wide movement, bringing together local charities to tackle youth homelessness on a national scale.
Nicholas Connolly, Managing Director for End Youth Homelessness, said: “Through our partnership with Yorkshire Building Society we are not only supporting homeless young people into their own rented homes, we are also aiming to break down the barriers that homeless young people face.”
